Confusion in Plateau PDP as Damagum, Anyanwu disagree over date for congresses

The fate of Chris Hassan -led state Executive council of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Plateau state hangs in the balance following a disagreement between the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu and National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, over the date for state Congress.Anyanwu had, in a letter dated July 7, 2025 written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) intimating the commission dates for congresses in three states – Cross River, Plateau and Kebbi, which was to hold Saturday September 27.However Ologunagba, in another letter dated September 24, 2025 told INEC that the congresses had been postponed to a new date, which will be communicated in due course.But in another counter letter dated September 26, 2025, Anyanwu said that the 27 September date for the election remained sacrosanct.The supremacy tussle between the two national officers appeared to have stalled the emergence of a new exco as the tenure of the Chris Hassan led executive would expire at midnight of September 27.Stakeholders of the party have expressed worries over the status of the party in Plateau and the effect of the face off between the two officers, pointing out that the same scenario led to the party losing out in all the National Assembly seats.A Chieftain of the party and front liner in the Jonah Jang redemption team, Mr. Issac Wadak, warned the party not to take the caretaker route as it had not benefitted the party in the past.He said, “By 12 midnight of September 27, Chris Hassan led exco’s tenure expires. I understand they are eligible for second tenure except some three or four positions.”We are watching for development as it’s been speculated that some official and unofficial people do not want them to contest. Never again should we go the caretaker (or is it undertaker) committee route on the Plateau”While congratulating the outgoing Exco for lifting PDP to this elevated position, he wished those eligible to contest for second tenure, best wishes and expressed the desire to see them perform better.He said that there’s no ambiguity in the letters written to the electoral body by the national secretary as he appeared to be in the right trajectory.”As for the letters from the party headquarters , there’s nothing confusing or contradictory about them.The one is setting the process and line of authority straight and the other might have been unofficial.”It’s recalled that the party lost all the state and national assembly seats when the Court of Appeal ruled that the exco that nominated them for the election was not known to law.Governor Caleb Mutfwang escaped the hangman’s noose because his own case got to the Supreme Court and it ruled in his favour
