Two women, 73 others to slug it out in Plateau LG polls October 9

Two women are among the 75 persons vying for the chairmanship position in the October 9 local government election in Plateau.

Interestingly only the two women, representing 2.6 per cent of the candidates., contesting for Bassa and Mikang local government chairmanship positions, have the highest qualification of doctorate degrees.

According to a source close to the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC), 16 females are vying for the deputy chairmanship position.The 75 candidates are running for chairmanship position in the 17 LGAs across 11 political parties.

Giving a breakdown of qualifications, 38 (50.6%) of chairmanship candidates hold senior school certificate examination, (SSCE), while 22 (29.3%) candidates are holders of Bachelor’s of Science (B.Sc) or Higher National Diploma (HND). Also 13 candidates, representing 17.3 per cent candidates hold masters of science M.Sc. or post graduate diploma (PGD).

According to the source, interestingly, one candidate contesting for the vice chairmanship position in Jos East holds a doctor of philosophy degree (Ph.D), while his flag bearer/chairmanship candidate is a holder of Bachelor’s of Law.For the councillorship position, 817 candidates across different political parties are contesting for the position in the 324 state wards.

The source said that disaggregation of the councillor candidates by the highest educational qualification shows that 682 candidates hold SSCE, 129 candidates are holders of B.Sc. or HND, five candidates are holders of M.Sc. or M.A. while only one candidate holds a Ph.D certificate.
